He is a Fellow of St Edmund’s College Cambridge\, a Distinguished Visiting Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, a member of the Academia Europaea\, a Board member of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust\, Chairman of the European Space Agency Director General’s High Level Science Policy Advisory Committee\, and Chairman of the London Climate Change Partnership. \nHis previous posts include Director of the Science Museum London\, Director of the British Antarctic Survey\, Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm and Head of the Earth Observation satellite group at University College London’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory. \nHis current interests are in the communication of climate science. DESCRIPTION:The Starmus VI\, one of the world-scale science and art festivals will take place in September 2022 in Yerevan\, Armenia\, to celebrate science communication with world-class scientists\, artists and astronauts. \nThe STARMUS VI will be dedicated to Mars\, from the very first Soviet MARS 3 to the ambitious manned landing plans and spectacular NASA missions. \nIt has been 50 years since MARS 3 performed the first soft landing on the Red Planet and sent back to the Earth the first image of its surface. This milestone was followed by dozens of successful missions by NASA providing us with more accurate images and information from our neighbor in the Solar System. Following the established tradition\, the Festival will address pressing issues and screen films about the exploration of Mars. \nPrevious film screenings included the documentary Apollo 11 and The Spacewalker\, a film about the legendary Russian astronaut and Starmus Board Member Alexei Leonov.

This time\, the topic will be of interest not only to specialists\, but also to just interested ones.\n\n\n\nTitle: Splicing ViT Features for Semantic Appearance Transfer\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Narek Tumanyan\, Graduate Student at The Weizmann Institute of Science\n\n\n\nDate and time: August 19\,12:00\n\n\n\nShort introduction: The seminar will cover “Splice” – a method for semantically transferring the visual appearance of one natural image to another. Specifically\, the goal is to generate an image in which objects in a source structure image are “painted” with the visual appearance of their semantically related objects in a target appearance image. The key idea of “Splice” is to leverage a pre-trained and fixed Vision Transformer (ViT) model by deriving novel representations of structure and appearance from deep ViT features. “Splice” does not involve adversarial training\, nor does it require any additional input information such as semantic segmentation or correspondences\, and can generate high-resolution results on a variety of in-the-wild image pairs\, under significant variations in the number of objects\, their pose and appearance.\n\n\nTo get a sense of the method and the results\, feel free to check out the project page before the seminar: splice-vit.github.io.
